Skoda Rapid Engine & Transmission

Skoda Rapid Overview

Skoda Rapid has been on sale since November 2011 in the Indian market and has tasted moderate success, despite the presence of several heavyweights like Honda City, Hyundai Verna and Volkswagen Vento in the same segment. With time progressing, the sales of the sedan started deteriorating as its rivals were far more advanced, up-market and affluent. It is what propelled Skoda India to introduce Skoda Rapid Facelift, which comes with several cosmetic upgrades and a subtle bump in power output. Identical to the preceding model, the Skoda Rapid 2017 is manufactured at the company’s production facility in Pune. It is present in both the petrol and diesel guises in three trim levels: Active, Ambition and Style. The Skoda Rapid Facelift exterior styling is in line with Skoda’s new design language, while the cabin boasts of a few contemporary features that weren’t seen on the predecessor.View for Rapid On Road Price in Chennai at CarzPrice

Skoda Rapid Exterior

The Skoda Rapid Black Edition looks exactly the same as the old car. The only difference is that the headlamps are blacked and also the alloy wheels are now black colored ones. The Rapid now gets projector lamps as well. This gives it a very sporty look. The Skoda Rapid is now aimed at the younger buyer. The front portion as well as the rear end remain the same and there is no change on either sides.

The interior layout of the Rapid is unchanged but the dual-tone dashboard now replaces brown trim on top with black. There are some leatherette elements in the cabin such as the steering wheel, gearknob, handbrake lever, etc. The quality, fit and finish is without doubt excellent and feels like a typical German car. The instrument cluster looks a bit dated though while the steering is great to hold.

The biggest change with the latest updates is the new 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system that comes with MirrorLink technology that syncs your smartphone with inbuilt apps. The sound quality of the audio system is quite satisfying. You still miss out on features like keyless entry and push button start, sunroof, auto headlamps, rear parking camera, etc. What you get though is cruise control, rain sensing wipers, reach and rake adjustable steering, cooled glovebox and footwell lighting.

The Skoda Rapid is mostly meant for people who love to be behind the wheel and for those who have a small family. The seats are very comfortable both at the front and the back but rear seat legroom is just average compared to some other cars in this segment. You also can’t fit three adults abreast with ease because of the big transmission hump in the middle. The boot is big and accommodating though with 460-litres of luggage capacity.

Skoda Rapid Engine & Transmission

A major change however, is the addition of the seven-speed automatic DSG transmission. This is the same one found on the Octavia and also the VW Vento. The Rapid is powered by a 103bhp four cylinder diesel unit and mated to the new DSG transmission. The Rapid Black Edition is a pleasure to drive car with the DSG transmission. No more shuffling through gears or having to press the heavy clutch, which is painful in city driving. Just shift the transmission to the “D” position and let the car do all the work. The shifts are seamless and there is not too much turbo-lag. The Rapid Black Edition is easy to drive and is comfortable too. Power wise the Skoda responds well to changes in the throttle position as well as deciding which gear to be in. One aspect that should be highlighted is that the seven-speed dual clutch DSG transmission provides a better fuel efficiency than then manual car. At 22.1km/l the Rapid Black Edition is extremely fuel efficient, all because of two extra cogs in the gears.

Skoda Rapid Performance and Handling

Pick any car from the entire Skoda lineup and it shines in this department. Same is the case with the Rapid. It offers excellent ride at high speeds with super confidence on the highways. It is well composed on undulations as well but patchy roads with deep potholes makes it thud loudly. The handling is very satisfying, it is eager to take corners hard and maintains its line without any drama. The steering feel is rich, giving you precise feedback about the wheels. The brakes offer good stopping power but it’s almost 2017 now and manufacturers should start offering rear discs for that extra edge on safety.

Skoda Rapid Braking and Safety

The new Skoda Rapid gets disc brakes with inner cooling, with single/piston floating caliper at the front, while drum brakes are at the helm of affairs at the rear. Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and dual airbags are offered as standard safety features across the entire variant lineup. In addition, several sophsticated safety features, such as Electronic Stability Control, Hill Hold Control, Parktonic Rear Parking Sensors, automatically-dimming rear view mirror, etc., are on offer with the top-end grades.

Skoda Rapid Verdict

When it comes to practicality, the Skoda Rapid Black Edition is a great car for this segment. Priced Rs.2 lakhs less than the Hyundai Verna it is a cheaper bet, but it doesn’t have as many features as the Korean car does. In a time where a customer buys a car for the satisfaction of driving the Skoda Rapid Black Edition is a definite recommendation from our side. There is enough power on tap. The space is great. With the rear A/C vent the comfort is wonderful and with a great fuel efficiency and automatic transmission the package seems unbeatable. The only place where this buy might bite you in the backside is on the service.
